Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered state police to increase security at houses of worship during Ramadan.
The governor took the measure during the Muslim holy month as a safety precaution.
In recent months, houses of worship across the globe have been under attack.  In March, dozens were killed in New Zealand in two mosque shootings. On Easter Sunday, 250 people were killed and hundreds injured in Sri Lanka in an attack on Christians. Last weekend, a woman was killed and three were injured during a shooting at a synagogue in California.
Ramadan runs from this Sunday to June 4.
