Rockland County Executive Ed Day reissued his state of emergency order over the measles outbreak Thursday, just hours before his original emergency order was set to expire. The original order was issued in March and later struck down by a judge.
Day’s announcement comes as the number of measles cases in the county has spiked to 200 – the worst outbreak the U.S. has seen in decades.
“Rockland County, with .01% of the national population, has 29% of the cases of measles,” said Day.
Day said the emergency order, which begins at midnight, doesn't include new directives, but simply re-enforces and legally supports the two policies issued by the county health commissioner last week.
The first policy is an exclusion order banning anyone with the measles or exposed to the virus from indoor and outdoor public places. It has already resulted in five violations.
The second order bans more than 330 students identified as being unvaccinated from attending 16-affected schools.
Day also clarified that the county has spoken with Jewish leaders, and that nowhere in the Orthodox Jewish faith is there support for religious exemption against the measles vaccine.
Schools in Rockland have been off for the last week for spring break. The county health commissioner says she expects unvaccinated students to stay home when classes resume this week.
