Police: Northport man pointed loaded rifle, knife at officer

A Northport man is accused of pointing a loaded rifle and a butcher's knife at a police officer.
Police were called to a home on Fort Salonga Road in Northport late Thursday night. A tenant of the house told officers he was punched by 22-year-old Logan Arens -- another tenant who lives in the basement of the same house. After seeing the victim's bloody mouth, one of the officers opened the basement door.
Police say Arens pointed a loaded .22-caliber rifle at the officer with one hand and had a knife in the other. The officer drew his gun, ordering Arens to drop the weapons. After being told multiple times, they say Arens complied and was arrested.
Northport Police Chief Bill Ricca says it's unknown why Arens punched the other tenant. But Ricca says they haven't had any prior contact with him.
Arens was charged with menacing a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon and harassment.
Ricca says no one was hurt during the arrest.
Police say the prosecutor asked the judge to set bail for Arens at $50,000, but he was released on $5,000 bail. He's due back in court next week.
