Gun violence victims were among those in Newburgh Wednesday to help unveil a program aimed at curbing the issue that has plagued the city for years.

Officials celebrated the creation of a local chapter of an anti-violence program, SNUG, thanks to a $200,000 state grant. The program will be run by the inmate re-entry program RECAP, and works by creating relationships and offering resources to community members at risk of gun violence.

SNUG has proven successful in major cities like Yonkers and Poughkeepsie, according to officials.

Newburgh business owner Terry Harrigan was shot inside his store in 2011. He says he still remembers the day like it was yesterday.

"This kid walked in and said 'Give me all the money you got in the store,'" says Harrigan. "He just spun around - boom - fired a shot."

Harrigan says the steps the city has been taking in recent years are welcome.
