New Rochelle parents are calling on the Mahopac Central School District to take action after they claim students exhibited racist behavior at a lacrosse game.

Parents of boys on the New Rochelle High School junior varsity lacrosse team say their children faced racist behavior at a game last week. One parent says they called opposing players "(expletive) Mexicans" and avoided shaking hands with African-American players.

The player accused of using foul language was taken out of the game, but parents say that is not enough. They claim Mahopac athletes have exhibited racist behavior a number of times since 2014.

"When you smack talk, that's totally different because that's just competitive mentality," says Brandon Thomas, who plays for New Rochelle's varsity team. "When you start using racial slurs, that's disrespecting the person's background."

Thomas says the boys should be suspended for at least a few games.

The New Rochelle School District says they have been in touch with the Mahopac Central School District. Mahopac Superintendent Anthony DiCarlo said in part, "We must be ever-vigilant when confronting behavior that runs counter to expected norms...Anyone found responsible will be held accountable in accordance with district policies and procedures."
