Dog lovers in the Village of Mamaroneck are pushing for a permanent place to walk their pooches.
There is no current dog park in the village, so many pet owners take their dogs to Harbor Island.
A resident-led petition is now calling on officials to take a portion of a former village-owned landfill on Taylor's Lane, near Boston Post Road, and turn it into a place where owners can walk their dogs.

The village’s mayor says the environmental cleanup of the former garbage dump is almost complete, which would make it safe to use as a dog park.

Mayor Thomas Murphy says the village is close to a resolution with the state Department of Environmental Conservation about using the land.
"Dogs are social animals, and they like to congregate as a group. This gives their owners and the dogs an opportunity for socialization,” he says.
Murphy is optimistic a new dog park in the village will be ready to go in about a year.
