Concerned parents came out in droves Monday to demand a local law to protect children from getting their hands on marijuana.
Attendees at a meeting at Pleasantville Village Hall asked officials to pass a law that would ban businesses from selling or marketing marijuana toward children.
Some Pleasantville residents say they are worried about the repercussions of recreational marijuana being legalized in New York. This comes after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his intention to legalize the adult use of recreational marijuana last month.
The move is part of the state's efforts to end what it calls unjust criminal convictions.
"This was an effort to get ahead of the issue, meet with local governments and see if we can put something in place that in the event it does get passed. (It) may help mitigate some of the problems that arise," says Jay Lacapria, president of the Dad's Club of Pleasantville.
Others think it is more important to educated children about marijuana, and that the effects of sheltering them through fear can be detrimental.
"Just say, look, you know, this may not be good neurologically for you -- you know, if it's legalized, don't use it -- and if you use it, you have to pay the consequences of your actions," says Marilyn V., of Pleasantville.
