Report: Undocumented immigrants fired from Trump’s club in Briarcliff Manor

Posted: Updated:

A dozen long-time workers at Trump National Golf Club were fired due to their immigration status, according to a Washington Post report.

An attorney for some of the ex-employees told the Washington Post that they had worked at the Briarcliff Manor golf course for years and even received employee of the month awards until they were fired because they are undocumented immigrants.

The lawyer says each of the terminated employees were called in to speak with human resources executives from Trump headquarters. They were fired one by one on Jan. 18 during the government shutdown, which was caused by a standoff between President Donald Trump and Congress over immigration and funding for a border wall.

Some people don't believe it's a coincidence that the employees were fired at the same time President Donald Trump was having a debate about undocumented immigrants and their families.

"I understand that it's really important to verify people's immigration status but I think that this was really him using them as a ploy to make a point and to say we don't do that when in fact they have hired undocumented people all this time," says Audrey Gelfand of Briarcliff/Ossining Indivisible. "These are just people like us who really just want to come here, work hard, put food on the table, send their kids to school."

Workers at Trump's golf club in New Jersey experienced similar firings about a year ago.
