Thursday's rain and unseasonably mild weather might be to blame for a roof collapse in Downtown Peekskill.

A sprinkler apparently broke, sending water flooding and causing a roof collapse inside an empty 2,500-square-foot space at the Peekskill train station.

Construction was just about to get underway to turn it into an Italian restaurant.

The goal was to open the restaurant by the spring, but the owner Louie Lanza says all of the damage could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair, forcing a delay on the opening. Lanza kept his spirits high, seeing the damage as a temporary setback to what he believes will be a welcoming gem in Downtown Peekskill.

"We're going to take this and make it into a neighborhood wood-burning pizza place with a great wine bar, really make it friendly and affordable for everyone who comes to town," says Lanza.

The new eatery will replace the once-popular Kelley's Restaurant, which closed about 10 years ago.
