‘Absolute tragedy’: Loved ones mourn NYPD officer killed in crashPosted: Updated:
It was a day of mourning for family and friends of 28-year-old NYPD Officer Brian Kessler, of New Rochelle, who was killed last week in a crash in the Bronx.
Officer Kessler had just finished off an overnight shift in Manhattan and was heading home when authorities say he slammed head-on into a city garbage truck.
The crash occurred Jan. 16 along Shore Road in the Pelham Bay section of the Bronx. He later died at the hospital.
Kessler was a 2009 graduate of New Rochelle High School. He graduated from the NYPD Police Academy last April and worked for NYPD'S Housing Authority. He was assigned to Police Service Area 8 in the Bronx.
Fellow NYPD officers filed into Westchester Funeral Home in Tuckahoe to pay their respects Tuesday.
NYPD Commissioner James O'Neill told News 12 that Officer Kessler's death was an "absolute tragedy."
"This is what he wanted to do his whole life," O'Neill said.
Kessler was engaged and those who worked with him say he was well-liked.
