Officials: Man slain in Garfield; death linked to apparent suicide nearby

Prosecutors say a man was found dead in a Garfield apartment, and they believe the case is linked to the apparent suicide of another man who was fatally struck by a train not far away.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office says a man was fatally struck by a New Jersey Transit train in an apparent suicide shortly before 4 p.m. Saturday. The man's body was found under the train at Hobart Place.
As authorities investigated the suicide, the prosecutor's office says a 911 call to Garfield police reported an unconscious man who was found in a pool of blood in a basement apartment on Macarthur Avenue. That man was pronounced dead, and authorities say he had been "attacked" and was the victim of a homicide.
Prosecutors say the two deaths are believed to be related, but they have not provided further details at this time.
The two men have not been identified pending the notification of next of kin. The Bergen County Medical Examiner's Office will conduct autopsies.
