Yonkers officials: Salt spreaders treat roads ahead of temp drop

Posted: Updated:
YONKERS -

Yonkers officials say that salt spreading will continue throughout the city as temperatures begin to plunge.

They say that salt will be put on the roads throughout Sunday into Monday.

Yonkers DPW Commissioner Thomas Meier tells News 12 that regular salt starts losing its effectiveness when the temperature drops to below 25 degrees. He says at that point, the DPW will treat the salt with a calcium chloride mixture, which should add traction and melt any ice.

Meier says the DPW is most concerned about the city's infamous hills.

Yonkers officials ask everyone on the roads to proceed with caution.
