It was a rude wakeup call for some Yonkers residents this morning as a water main break flooded a neighborhood near Saw Mill River Road and Tompkins Avenue.
According to the Department of Public Works, the break happened around 6:30 a.m. Crews arrived on scene to shut the water off around 7:30 a.m.
Workers say they are cleaning up all of the mud and pumping water out to get a better look at the pipe. With the cold temperatures, the city has also salted the roads a couple times to prevent icing.
One neighborhood resident, who lives down the hill on Edison Avenue, says there was about a foot of water in the street and that the shed behind his home flooded. "Out of nowhere the whole place just filled up with water. There was literally… it was just a waterfall coming down that hill right there," says Nuno Oliviera, of Yonkers.
Crews are expected to be working through most of the day. Motorists can expect some delays on Saw Mill River Road between Jackson and Odell avenues and some intermittent closures as they work.
