MOUNT VERNON -

Officials say a man drove through a gated embankment near the Mount Vernon train station Saturday, plunging around 50 feet to his death.

The unidentified man was driving in his Toyota along East First Street around 2:30 p.m. when he went through the gate and landed near the train tracks.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mayor Richard Thomas called it a “tragic accident.”

Mayor Thomas is calling on the MTA to install more secure gates around the train station.

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash.
