Car slams into Yonkers home, leading to marijuana grow house probe

Posted: Updated:

A car slammed into a home in Yonkers early Friday morning, and police are now investigating whether the home was being used as a marijuana grow house.

Officials say that the incident happened around 3 a.m. at 73 Shonnard Place. According to police, a man whose name has not been released came down Park Avenue and slammed into the two-family home.

Following an investigation, more than a dozen marijuana plants were seized from the home.

"They just bagged everything and took everything, which was crazy," says neighbor Sara Arce. "They had this whole truck, it's crazy."

The home is just three houses down from the city's 4th Precinct and across the street from Gorton High School.

So far, no arrests have been made.

The man driving the car told investigators that there were mechanical difficulties and it caused him to lose control and crash into the front of the house. The man says he was able to climb into the back seat and get out of the car on his own.

Fire officials say that the man drove right into the section of the home that has utility lines and that he hit a gas line.

They say that gas was leaking inside the home when the accident happened. The two families living there had to be evacuated for safety concerns.

The driver was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Police have told News 12 that no charges have been filed against the driver at this point.
