Carpet mill gutted by fire set to become new hub in Yonkers

YONKERS -

A carpet mill that was gutted by a fire in 2017 is about to get a face-lift.

The burned-out section of the Alexander Smith Carpet Mills is set to be transformed into a space for entertainment venues.

Places for axe throwing, escape rooms and playrooms for children are just some of the businesses expected to come to the abandoned area.

The developers, Momentum Realty, want to create a mixed-use space that they hope will benefit everyone.

"We want the community to grow and prosper," an employee of the developer says. "So this building gives us the opportunity to not only bring entertainment to the community but also lots of new jobs."

Mayor Mike Spano agrees that the project called "The Mill" will improve the quality of the city.

Momentum Realty hopes that the new amenities in the 55,000-square-foot space will increase traffic to an area that hasn't been used in a long time.

The development company is also open to having startups move in and is currently accepting applications.

They plan to begin construction on The Mill in January and hope to open early summer 2019.
