Thornwood mail theft gets residents thinking about mail safety

Posted: Updated:
THORNWOOD -

The theft of residential mail in Thornwood has made residents consider the safety of their mailboxes.

Two suspects are accused of stealing from residential mailboxes. They are facing possible credit card fraud charges.

Police say they received calls about a suspicious vehicle in the neighborhood. When officers stopped the car, they found stolen mail from the area, including towns outside of Thornwood.

There are several steps that can be taken to keep mailboxes and their contents safe.

Homeowners can purchase a tamper-resistant mailbox or get a post office box.

Credit card or insurance offers can be opted out of by calling 1-888-5OPTOUT.

Also, keeping outgoing mail in a mailbox is exceptionally risky around the holidays. To prevent issues, mail can be brought to a post office or delivery service.
