Conversion therapy is officially banned in Westchester County as of Thursday.
Conversion therapy is the practice of trying to change someone’s sexual orientation from gay or bisexual to straight by using intervention.
The new law outlaws the practice on minors.
Advocates say conversion therapy is inhuman.
Mathew Shurka said, “I contemplated suicide for two years, then was able to leave conversation therapy at age 21, went through a recovery period where I then came out of the closet at 23, and today I’m a 30-year-old man, living my life fully.”
Westchester is now the seventh county in the state to make conversion therapy illegal.
