The First Responder Memorial in Yonkers is in need of repair, and a local group is hoping to make it happen.
Built in 2004, the memorial has taken a beating from weather and shear old age. The flagpoles are leaning, stairs are uneven and some names on the memorial are illegible.
Police and Fire Memorial Foundation of Yonkers President David Barca is part of the charge to make a change. The nonprofit group is made up of active and retired first responders.
The group is seeking to raise $200,000 for a new memorial.
"The city has been great, they put money aside, but with budget issues, they need help and these are our brothers on the wall, it's up to us to keep their memory alive and have this place be a fitting tribute," says Barca.
Barca says plans include repaving the stones with granite, making a handicap accessible ramp and refurbishing the names.
The memorial bears the names of 44 firefighters and police officers who died in the line of duty. But more than half a dozen names need to be added for those who died of 9/11-related illnesses.
There is a barbecue Saturday to raise money for the memorial at JFK Marina in Yonkers.
