Tenants march to urge Ossining board to allow rent stabilization, other tenant protections

The Village of Ossining board held a meeting Wednesday to discuss a vote that would allow rent stabilization and other protections to tenants.

Dozens of tenants marched to the Ossining Village Hall to urge the village trustees to vote for the Emergency Tenant Protection Act. 

If adopted, supporters said ETPA would be the largest expansion of rent-stabilized housing in the state in two decades.

Residents also said Ossining is undergoing a severe affordable housing crisis and that they're taking steps to reverse it. 

Opponents, including building owners and homeowners, said ETPA is an outdated law that would result in higher taxes for homeowners.

While a vote has not been scheduled, Mayor Victoria Gearity said she's against ETPA, but three trustees, a majority, are for it.
