The American Automobile Association says that as many as 35 million Americans will be traveling 50 miles or more for the Labor Day holiday weekend.
It also says this summer was one of the busiest summer travel seasons on record.
AAA says more than 16 million people will be flying to their holiday destinations, and that most plan on leaving today.
Despite gas prices being at a four year high, AAA says most travelers will be driving out of town.
This means that in New York, travel times could triple depending on where you're destination is.
AAA says that currently, gas prices in New York are 2.5 cents cheaper than last month.
Officials say the best ways to avoid traffic are to leave earlier in the morning and later in the evening.
New York State police officials say they're reminding drivers that state troopers and local law enforcement will be out in full force through Labor Day weekend as a part of the national "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign to prevent drugged and drunken driving.
Texting and driving laws will also be strictly enforced during the weekend.
