Thruway rest stops deploy climate-controlled doghouses

How can you keep your pets cool while traveling during the dog days of summer? Climate-controlled doghouses, if you're traveling along the New York State Thruway.
The DogSpot company has equipped them with heating and air conditioning to keep canine companions at a safe temperature while their humans make rest stops.
The DogSpot houses can be found at 10 roadside stations along the Thruway.
The idea is to give pet owners a safer option for pets if they want to spend more than just a few minutes at a rest stop.
The company says the crates fit most dogs comfortably and use fans to keep the air inside fresh. The crates have virus- and bacteria-killing UV lights and self-clean after each use. They cost 30 cents per minute to use.
Pet owners can access them with a smartphone app to check on their pets or unlock the door.
Company officials say they pets should stay in the crates for 15 to 90 minutes.
