Suraj Patel hopes to unseat Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney in the Democratic primary for New York's 12th Congressional District, which includes parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan.
He earned a master's degree in public policy from Cambridge University and worked on Barack Obama's successful presidential campaign in 2008.
He remained on President Obama's White House staff for both terms.
He says he wants to take on corporate monopolies by cracking down on mergers and acquisitions.
