1st round of U.S. Open creates traffic on the East End

The first round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in Southampton brought out golfing fans from far and wide Thursday morning - creating a traffic jam that had many complaining.
News 12 Long Island spoke to fans at the golf course who said it took nearly an hour just to travel 1 mile. One fan’s advice to those traveling to the U.S. Open this weekend was to leave yourself plenty of time.
Southampton police say they're adjusting their traffic plan each day to accommodate crowds. Officials gave News 12 Long Island an exclusive look inside the Joint Operations Center at the U.S. Open that's keeping an eye on the traffic. Representatives from 30 different police agencies are watching traffic flow in addition to keeping an eye on security at an event that draws more than 23,000 people to the area.
Officials recommend using public transportation to get to the tournament if possible. The tournament, featuring the best golfers in the world, will wrap up on Sunday.
