Responders take part in emergency drill at Westchester County Airport

Posted: Updated:
WHITE PLAINS -

A major emergency response drill was held Saturday at Westchester County Airport.

The drill was a simulated crash, complete with a fire, a ripped apart plane and volunteers playing the part of victims.

Airport manager Peter Scherrer says well over 1,000 people were involved in the full-scale emergency exercise, from first responders to hospital workers to people from the coroner's office.

About 150 volunteers played victims, and many of them are future EMS first responders in training, including students from Westchester BOCES.

Emergency crews staged at SUNY Purchase responded to the airport, and evaluators were on the scene to monitor the response. The FAA requires such drills of all airports.

People in the area were being warned that fire trucks and ambulances around the airport were just there for the drill.
