Parents gathered in Stratford Wednesday night to discuss concerns that a popular magnet school in town may be turned into a neighborhood school.
Students attend Stratford Academy through a lottery system, which means they are bused from all over town. But officials say the lottery for kindergarten has been postponed because of possible cuts to school transportation funds.
At the meeting at the Baldwin Center, some parents said they feel the Stratford Academy would change for the worse if it stopped admitting kids by lottery from the entire town. Others say the policy is unfair to families who live nearby.
Stratford Mayor Laura Hoydick says the district is looking to save money on busing, and having more kids go to school near home might be a solution.
Some parents say they fear the change would mean upheaval for their kids.
"There is no plan that is available for anyone to see, it's all just up in the air at this point," says Jennifer Hunt. "It would sort of disrupt the children's learning, and they are planning to implement this within a few months. They haven't showed us a plan where the redistricting will be and how much they will save on busing."
While the change has been discussed by the board of education, there has been no official proposal at this point.
