Doctors welcome FDA-approved blood test to detect concussions

A new blood test recently cleared by the FDA can accurately determine when someone suffers from a concussion.
The Banyan Brain Trauma Indicator test works by determining the levels of proteins in a person’s blood after a head injury.
According to the FDA, the test had a 97.5 percent success in determining if there was any brain trauma from an impact or concussion. The test could reduce a patient's exposure to the radiation and cost of a CT scan.
Doctors say that while the new test could help diagnose dangerous concussions or brain injuries, it is not a one-shot test. It is just one tool for diagnosing a brain injury.
The test is currently approved for adults by the FDA, but unofficially could be used by doctors on children. Researchers plan to start a clinical trial with injured children soon.
