Medicinal plants part of exhibit at New York Botanical Garden
Dozens of medicinal plants are part of a new exhibit at the New York Botanical Garden.
The botanical garden's conservatory is home to more than 3,000 plants and now 22 of them are on display in the "Wild Medicine in the Tropics" exhibit.
The exhibit is dedicated to educating visitors about the medicinal nature of plants.
Many plants and trees like the cacao plant contain chemicals that can dull nerve sensitivity to pain and are used to dilate veins to improve blood flow.
Cacao is also the purest form of chocolate.
About 25 percent of all prescription medicines are based on plant compounds, health officials say.
The exhibit is on display until Feb. 25.
