Police are warning commuters in White Plains after they say a woman was assaulted near a train station.

White Plains police say a woman was walking alone from the White Plains train station on Wednesday around 11:30 p.m. when a man on a bike came from behind, grabbed her and tried to drag her into a weeded area. Police say the man then rode off on his bike. The woman was not badly hurt.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 6 inches. Police say he was wearing dark clothes at the time of the incident.

Officials say the area where the incident occurred is a shortcut for commuters getting to and from the train station. They say it is not a well-lit area and are telling people to stay away from it for now.

"Until we catch this particular individual, I would advise everyone to walk on the lighted street even if you have to walk a little bit further," says David Chong, White Plains public safety commissioner.

Commuters say they are now checking their surroundings or traveling with a group of people.

"I'm extra careful, I make sure to not have my headphones in if I'm walking super late in the dark," says Jesse Karin, of White Plains. "I'm usually texting with a parent, making sure they know where I am."

Police say they are looking at surveillance video from the area to help in the ongoing investigation. They ask anyone with information to call them.
