Two nursing home residents in Westchester have been hospitalized with Legionnaires’ disease. 

A nursing home official told News 12 that one of the residents at Sky View Rehabilitation & Health Care in Croton-On-Hudson was hospitalized on Friday. The other was hospitalized on Oct. 18.

Legionnaires’ disease is a type of pneumonia that is typically contracted when contaminated water is breathed in - typically a mist. Symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, fever and muscle pain. The elderly are most susceptible to contracting Legionnaires’ disease. 

The administrator of the nursing home told News 12 that they're working closely with the county and state health departments. He says they have tested the water, which came back negative for Legionnaires’ disease and they're proactively screening residents.

Nursing home officials say they also hired a firm that specializes in responding to waterborne disease outbreaks to help figure out the cause and work on the solution.

A spokesperson for the county Health Department says an investigation is ongoing. News 12 also reached out to the state Department of Health, but did not hear back.
