PEARL RIVER -

A car slammed into a home in Pearl River early Friday morning and sparked a destructive fire.

Police say it happened around 2 a.m. on Sickletown Road.

They say the family was inside sleeping at the time of the crash. The homeowners say they went outside to help get the driver out of the car, but the person was already gone.

The driver hit the home's gas line, causing a massive fire that took about an hour to extinguish.

Police were able to track the driver down at his home. He has been identified as 33-year-old Jude Donnelly and is charged with leaving the scene of an accident and numerous other traffic and vehicle charges.

They say drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the accident.

No one in the house was hurt.
