The family of a slain baseball prospect joined Yonkers officials and LiveOnNY Wednesday in an effort to register more organ donors.

James Nolan, whose son Michael died in a 2015 drive-by shooting, says he decided to donate the baseball star's organs so his legacy would live on.

"We saved six lives. Every day, Mike’s out there living," he says.

The push is part of a statewide campaign. New York state currently ranks last in the nation for the percentage of residents registered as organ donors: Only 30 percent of residents are registered.

Statistics show that every 18 hours a New Yorker dies waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. Currently, 10,000 New Yorkers are on a transplant waiting list.

The application to register is simple. Once registered, a donor heart is printed onto your driver’s license. However, volunteers at registration locations say many residents choose not to sign up. 

Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano says organ donation has become very real to him.  His sister Delores has stage 4 lung disease and will one day need a double-lung transplant.
