Hundreds attended a fundraiser at the Hilton Pearl River Thursday night in honor of a late college basketball coach.
Michael Coffey died in April 2016 at age 27. He had Duchenne muscular dystrophy, which confined him to a wheelchair past 14 years old. His family recently launched the Michael Coffey Foundation in his honor.
Coffey worked as the assistant men's basketball coach at Dominican College in Orangeburg. He was also inducted into the Rockland County Sports Hall of Fame. Four days after the induction, his heart stopped.
"He got to keep his dignity until the very last moment," said his sister, Michele.
The proceeds from Thursday's fundraiser will go toward helping people in need throughout Rockland County.
