Skaters gathered Thursday in Yonkers as the official ice skating season kicked off.
Murray's Skating Center held its grand reopening to unveil its new signs and fresh ice. The center has been providing skaters with quality programs since the 1960s and one employee has been around to see it all.
Bill Boralli, 82, has manned the skate check room since the Yonkers facility opened in January of 1960.
Boralli says that there's always something to learn at the job that he loves. One thing that he has seen over time is smaller crowds at the rink, but he still believes in its popularity.
"Skating has grown so much as a sport, much more than it was back in the day," says Boralli.
Boralli is known for greeting every skater with a smile and his trademark phrase, "If it doesn't fit just come right back, OK?"
Boralli has kept the rink's thousands of skates at top performance levels with a piece of machinery that has stood the test of time since he worked with his dad at 25. It's a process he takes satisfaction in performing.
"When you give the people the right tools to work with out there, it's sort of satisfactory to yourself," says Boralli.
