Residents are breathing a sigh of relief Friday after learning that Mount Vernon officials cleaned up an abandoned home they say had become more than an eyesore.
Residents say the home on Union Avenue had turned into a drug den. They say there was trash all over, broken windows and doors, and drug users at the home.
Homeowner Herbert Walton says the home had become a hotbed of drug activity over the years. He wants the home to be demolished. Walton says he's called police hundreds of times, but nothing ever changes.
Frustrated residents were losing hope until Friday when their voices were heard. Trash was cleaned up, an exterminator was brought in and the home was boarded up. Officials say the home may even be demolished within 10 days.
A spokesperson for the mayor issued a statement saying the mayor was pleased with the cleanup effort. However, some residents are still wondering what took so long.
