Two separate fires in Westchester left residents displaced over the Independence Day weekend.
People reportedly smelled smoke around 2 p.m. Saturday at a home on Sheldon Avenue in Tarrytown.
Dozens of firefighters were at the scene within minutes and spotted smoke coming from the attic area.
"There was a little bit of fault in the wiring and it went straight up these old houses," says Tarrytown Fire Chief David Goldstein. "They are what you call 'balloon construction' that go straight up. There's no fire stops in there."
News 12 is told one firefighter was treated for a minor injury.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, although officials say it may have been due to an electrical problem.
In Mount Vernon, a woman awoke to the smell of smoke in her home Saturday night.
Barbara Wisdom was asleep inside the Ellwood Avenue home when fire officials say flames broke out in the basement.
They say there may have been a problem with a refrigerator unit, but the official cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Wisdom says she lives in the home with her son and tells News 12 family members are going to look after them until the damage can be repaired.
