Hudson Valley military veterans embarked on an annual trip to Washington D.C. Saturday morning to tour the memorials created in honor of their service to the country.

Among the veterans taking part in the "Honor Flight" from Westchester County Airport was Donald Bernstein, 100, who service in World War II. 

"I was proud to serve my country," he told News 12. "I never forgot it and I wear the pins of World War II, Combat Infantry, my division, the blue and gray."

A sendoff ceremony was held at the airport, which attracted hundreds of patriotic well-wishers of all ages. This year's Honor Flight includes more than 40 World War II veterans and 27 Korean War veterans. Veterans from the Vietnam War were also onboard. 

Charles Lewis, of Yonkers, was one of the Tuskeegee Airmen – the group of African-American pilots who bravely distinguished themselves in World War II.

"I do feel honored to be a part of it," says Lewis. "This community, coming out here today, that's what's so important."

It was the sixth Honor Flight to depart from the Westchester County Airport.
