UPPER NYACK -

An 80-year-old man was killed Thursday after a tree fell and crushed his car in Upper Nyack.

Police say the tree fell on the Honda Accord around 7:30 a.m. in front of Upper Nyack Elementary School on North Broadway. When officers arrived, they found Jerome Muhlenberg, of Upper Nyack, dead inside the car.

The tree fell less than an hour before school was supposed to start. School officials canceled classes for the day, and school buses were rerouted to the high school.

Heavy branches also hit some power lines, causing temporary outages.
