Spring Valley man sentenced in New Year’s fatal stabbing

A Spring Valley man who fatally stabbed a Silver Lake volunteer firefighter at a New Year's party in 2016 was sentenced to five to 15 years behind bars Monday.
Juante Brown, 20, admitted to stabbing Justin Speights twice in the stomach while trying to break up one of several fights that broke out at what prosecutors say was a chaotic drug and alcohol-fueled, underage New Year's Eve house party on Paddock Drive in Crawford.
"What is so troubling about this case is that you have over 200 people - many of whom witnessed some part of this - yet not a single person came forward," said Orange County DA David Hoovler.
Orange County District Attorney Dave Hoovler says Speights' fellow firefighters were the ones who found the murder weapon miles away from the scene, which after months and hundreds of uncooperative interviews, eventually led to Brown.
Speights' family says the sentence is little consolation for their loss.
"I don't feel it's justice, but he's going to be punished for what he's done." says Lisa Speights.
Authorities say the case may not be over, with more arrests possible as their investigation continues.
Speights was a graduate of Pine Bush High School.
