Dangerous suspect on the loose after police-involved shooting in Mount Vernon

A police manhunt besieged Mount Vernon Thursday as a suspect wounded by police avoided arrest. Police say around 3:45 p.m., officers pulled over a black male suspect at the intersection of 2nd Street and 5th Avenue. He was allegedly driving a Honda Civic reported stolen from Port Chester. During the traffic stop, police say the man made a desperate attempt and backed the car up, striking a civilian. When he lurched the car forward at one of the officers, the officer fired a single shot, striking the suspect. Police say the man managed to get away somehow. The suspect abandoned the car on Rockledge Avenue in Kingsbridge and fled on foot. Police conducted a house-to-house search with a five-block radius and followed blood trails from the man they believe is badly injured. Police dogs picked up the suspect?s scent at the Nichols Middle School, but they were unable to locate him. Police say the suspect will face serious charges once apprehended.
