NY Thruway Authority moves to increase tolls

(AP) - The state Thruway Authority is moving towardfurther increasing tolls by 4 percent in 2009 and again in 2010.
The increases would be in addition to the 10-percent increase incash rates beginning in January. The rates for use of E-Z Pass, theelectronic toll collecting system, would result in smallerincreases.
The authority says the increases are needed because spiking gasprices are limiting travel which reduces revenue needed for its$2.1 billion highway and bridge repair plan.
The measure that is now approved by the authority's Finance andAudit Committee would also increase local commuter passes andincrease bridge tolls from the Tappan Zee to Grand Island.
