Bedford P.D. mum after dispatch tapes released
The Bedford Police Department is clamming up after dispatch audio tapes were leaked to the press where officers apparently joked about a dying immigrant.
In the stunning audio tape, Bedford police joke about Rene Perez, a drunken, homeless illegal immigrant found dying on the side of Byram Lake Road on the Bedford/Mount Kisco border in April 2007.
"We're asking that the chief of this department, Menzel as the head of the department, either resign or punish these officers who laughed as another human being was being murdered," said Fernando Mateo, president of Hispanics Across America.
So far, Westchester prosecutors say it doesn't look like there's anything criminal on the tapes. However, the Bedford Police Department remains very tight lipped on the matter and will not speak to the press.
Mount Kisco Police Officer George Bubaris has been charged with manslaughter for beating and leaving Perez to die. His trial is set to begin in April.
Meantime, Mateo is calling on town leaders in Bedford and Mount Kisco to hold a town hall meeting to address community concerns about their officers. The attorney for the Perez family plans to re-file a lawsuit against the Bedford Police Department.
