Fatal crash prompts anti-'robo-tripping' push

A man's death in a car crash caused by a driver who admitted to being high on cough medicine is prompting calls for sales restrictions.
County legislators are mulling prohibiting the sale of cough syrup to people under 18. Similar laws are in effect in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island. Currently, CVS and Walgreens voluntarily card people under 18 in order to purchase the medicine.
According to Tom Meier, of Westchester County's Stop DWI program, 5 to 9 percent of local teens have admitted to abusing medicines such as Robitussin.
One such person is Mohd Shreiqein, 21, who was sentenced last month to three years in state prison for the 2007 death of Anthony Viero, 87, in a car crash. If passed, the measure would be called Anthony's Law in honor of the World War II veteran.
