Police identify body found in river

A body found in the Hudson River is not that of missing kayaker Vincent Viafore, officials say.
Authorities believe the remains are that of a person who police believe may have jumped from the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge in January.
Town of Bethlehem police say the body found Tuesday is that of 41-year-old David P. Betterton of Dutchess County. He was reported missing to state police in Wappinger Falls on Jan. 19.

His body was found at the North Albany Terminal dock at the oil storage company's property on the river's west bank.

Police say they determined his body became snagged on a barge heading upriver from New Jersey on Tuesday, when it dislodged after the barge docked.

An autopsy determined the cause of death to be blunt force trauma and asphyxia due to drowning. Foul play has been ruled out and the investigation has been closed.
Meanwhile, there still no sign of the 46-year-old Viafore. Investigators say he presumably drowned after his kayak overturned in rough waters near Cornwall.
Police are once again searching the river today along the shoreline and by boat.
