MTA payroll tax could be reduced in overhaul

A plan to reduce taxes on the middle class in New York State also includes a reduction in the controversial MTA payroll tax.

The MTA payroll tax would be reduced on small businesses if the bill is passed; private schools would be exempt. As a result, the payroll tax would be eliminated or reduced for 294,900 taxpayers, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-N.Y.) said.

The transit tax affects 12 counties, including Putnam, Westchester and Rockland. The state would compensate the MTA for the $250 million in lost revenue.
