Haitian immigrant killed by police officer laid to rest
Hundreds gathered in Spring Valley today to mourn Herve Gillies, a Haitian immigrant who was shot to death earlier this month by a police officer.
Members of the Haitian community joined Gilles' family in a march from the site of his death to the church where his funeral was held. Joining them was Gilles' mother, who came from Haiti.
Gilles, who friends say had a history of mental illness, was shot and killed Dec. 14 by a Spring Valley police officer. Police say the officer was acting in self-defense because Gilles was acting violently while drunk.
Spring Valley police and the Rockland County District Attorney are both investigating the shooting. The name of the police officer who shot Gilles has not been released.
