Many New Rochelle city jobs taken off chopping block

Many jobs that were slated to be cut from the New Rochelle budget have been reinstated.
Six firefighter positions, two community service officers and 18 part-time crossing guards whose jobs were on the chopping block now appear to be safe.
In all, 54 positions were originally expected to be cut in the city's $144 million proposed budget.
The city had budgeted for a 16 percent increase in health insurance for employees. But it's now estimated the increase will be just 5 percent, and the city will see a savings of about $1 million.
The city council has opted to use the money to restore some of the city's most critical positions.
However, the city manager says that because of state mandates, the same cuts may have to be revisited next year.
