Story of Ossining HS student’s detention by ICE goes viral
The story of an Ossining High School student detained by immigration officials on the day of his prom continues to gain traction around the country, including online.
News 12 first reported about Diego Puma’s arrest at his home last week on News 12 Westchester's Facebook Live. Since then, viewers from around the world have shared their reactions on social media.
A #DiegoPuma search shows some people support the federal government's decision to detain him and his mom. Others stand by Diego – an online petition in support of the teen has more than 20,000 signatures.
According to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Puma will remain in detention because he was involved in gangs in his native Ecuador.
Puma is currently in an Orange County corrections facility with his mother.  The family's legal counsel says they will most likely remain there through the deportation process, which could take months.
