Both chambers of the state Legislature have voted to transfer ownership of the old National Guard armory in Freeport back to the village.

The Senate and Assembly voted this week to pass a bill championed by Long Island Assemblywoman Taylor Raynor.

The 3-acre parcel is located on Babylon Turnpike. It's sat unused since 2011, when the National Guard moved out.

Freeport Mayor Robert Kennedy has entertained multiple ideas for the property's future, including moving the village Department of Public Works yard there or using it as a community center or housing.

Michele Baptise, of the North East Civic Association, says traffic from large DPW trucks in the neighborhood is unwanted. She adds that the village and state are moving too quickly and community members need a louder voice.

Kennedy says he does want the public's input if the armory is transferred back to the village, as well as studies on what should be done with it.

News 12 has not heard from the governor's office for comment on when or if he would sign the transfer.
