The New York State Gaming Commission on Monday approved a vote on rules that would let New York’s private and Native-owned casinos accept bets on sporting events.

A public comment period of at least 45 days is underway before the rules can be finalized.

The rules state all sports wagers must be placed in person. Mobile betting is prohibited by law and allowing it would require the state Legislature to pass a new bill.

The gaming commission also approved MGM Resorts' purchase of Empire City Casino and Yonkers Raceway, ending the Rooney family's ownership.

An MGM spokesperson released a statement saying in part, "We couldn't be more excited to become part of the Yonkers community and welcome Empire City's 1,200 members to the MGM Resorts family."

MGM officials have not officially announced what they plan to do with the casino.
